If a rehab facility claims its services are free, it is generally free due to donations in-kind and is free to all who enter the program.

State-funded rehab centers have a set amount of funding to cover costs of care and services.

This means they may only take so many program participants in a given month/year and can only offer treatment services and treatment duration for what’s covered by program guidelines.

State-funded programs may also require that you are eligible based on income and other requirements, due to state-based regulations they must follow in order to receive their grant.

Which type of rehab center you should enter can be a tough decision. In addition to cost, there are other factors to weigh.

• Do I have to meet certain eligibility requirements to qualify?
• What level of care do I need (i.e. inpatient or outpatient)? Does the rehab center offer it?
• What is the facility’s plan for long-term or continuing care?

If you cannot find a state-funded or free rehab center with openings, it may be best to find a treatment program in a different facility so you can get care right away.

If you can’t find a free or state-funded treatment center, you still have low-cost options for addiction recovery.

• health insurance: This is the top way to mitigate the costs of addiction treatment, since many insurance programs cover most or all treatment expenses.
• apply for a rehab scholarship: Some treatment facilities offer private scholarships to cover the full or partial cost of your rehab programs. You may have to qualify.
• use your savings: If you have funds put away, there is no better investment you can make than investing in your health by seeking long-term recovery. Some 401k plans let you borrow against them for emergencies.
• get a loan: Some lenders offer specific loans to cover the cost of rehab programs.
• try crowdfunding: Many family and friends of those with substance use issues just want to see their loved one get help and may offer financial support.
